Councilman Mosley warns PJM capacity auction could raise local electric bills

Councilman Matt Mosley told the Brooklyn City Council that a recent PJM Interconnection capacity auction produced a sharp increase in capacity costs and warned the increase could translate to higher electric bills for local households beginning in June.
Mosley said the auction last June resulted in an 800% increase in capacity pricing and that PJM expects the higher capacity costs to persist for an estimated three to five years while grid capacity is added. He said the change could add roughly 10 to 15% to a typical customer’s bill starting in the June billing cycle.
Mosley recommended several household measures to reduce energy use, including investing in Energy Star-rated appliances, installing smart thermostats, improving insulation, conducting an energy audit and considering rooftop solar to offset grid costs. He also recommended that residents check supplier charges on the “supplier end” of their bills and explore competitive suppliers when possible.
