Council Member June George told colleagues that Columbia Gas encountered an obstruction when installing a new gas line on Maple Heights, revealing a clogged or damaged storm sewer near the street that has caused recurring local issues.
"Columbia Gas is putting a new lines on Maple Heights area, and they ran into a hitch because the storm sewers are locked in our area," George said, displaying a photograph she brought to the meeting and asking staff to investigate whether the blocked structure is on public or private property.
George said she had spoken with Service Director Nikki Ward and water-department personnel, and that Columbia Gas has previously attempted winter repairs on the nearby gas lines. Council discussed whether the clogged structure appeared to be located roughly five feet from the street and whether it was a public storm sewer or a private installation. City staff did not reach a final determination during the meeting but acknowledged they would follow up.
No formal motion or vote followed. Council Member George said her purpose was to make the council aware of the neighborhood concern and to prompt staff investigation.
