Madison district reports progress on Brown School projects, Pre‑K conversion and playground bids

District staff provided a multi‑item progress report on the Brown School renovation and refresh program, saying the site’s many projects are moving forward and that several installations and abatement work are scheduled around the school calendar.

On smaller upgrades, staff said a code application for a dishwasher is in process and that initial indications suggest the project will be less costly than feared. Staff described security improvements being planned in coordination with the director of administrative services and the Brown administration to add access control on doors.

Playground site work has entered planning and the project team completed a pre‑bid walkthrough and is awaiting contractor bids. District staff said the Art Room Refresh purchase order was finalized in April and work is scheduled to begin in May; the exterior walk‑in freezer is slated to start in July. External signage proofs were approved and are in vendor storage pending a June installation, and the media center flooring is scheduled for June.

The Brown Pre‑K room conversion has advanced: millwork shop drawings were approved, both rooms cleared for construction, and abatement letters issued. District staff said asbestos tile and other materials will be removed over April break so interior construction can proceed; the project is expected to be ready for the beginning of the school year. The brown band room and adjacent office refresh are substantially complete, with only punch‑list items remaining.

District staff emphasized sequencing around the school calendar to minimize noisy work during instruction and said they will try to schedule lower‑noise tasks during the school year. Staff invited questions about the Brown projects and noted that some small punch‑list items remain.
