Rachel, a county veterans services representative, updated the board on March 19 about outreach, food pantry activity and housing needs among veterans.
Rachel said the office hosted 32 veterans at a recent luncheon and that coffee hour and pantry services continue to see regular use. "The pantry is super busy as always," she said, and noted that the office is working to recruit a per-diem driver to assist veterans with transportation.
Nut graf: The veterans office described immediate service demand and asked county supervisors to help share veteran event information across towns to improve outreach and referrals.
Rachel said the office is coordinating with the Stratton VA, which provides transportation for homeless veterans and others in need. She said staff have referred veterans to a local warming center and supplied clothing and food when needed. On housing, Rachel said affordable housing remains an unmet need: "Affordable housing is an issue with our veterans, unfortunately," she said.
Board members asked whether the veterans office tracks service denials or treatment gaps at the VA. Rachel said staff will begin noting when veterans report problems accessing VA services and will follow up with contacts at the VA. She described at least one recent incident in which a veteran seeking emergency care for seizures encountered delays in specialist access during a weekend; Rachel said she was not aware of systemwide changes but would record and report individual cases that veterans report to the office.
The veterans office also noted local development projects proposing small-home clusters and tiny-home plans for veterans; staff said they are aware of proposals in multiple towns but did not identify developers by name.
Ending: Rachel asked supervisors to share local event notices and contact information so the veterans office can reach veterans throughout the county; she said staff will track complaints about difficulty obtaining VA services and report back to the board if patterns emerge.
