School cafeterias reported December losses; district served 48,526 meals and expects state reimbursements

The district’s food service director presented the cafeteria report for December to the operations committee on Jan. 13, reporting a monthly operating loss and participation and reimbursement figures.
Mr. Bondi said the cafeteria operation posted a monthly loss of $10,810 for December and a year-to-date loss of $45,356. The cafeterias served 48,526 meals in December and the director said the district expected about $107,897 in reimbursements for those meals. For federal and state reimbursement related to free breakfasts and lunches, the district was owed $1,481.50 for December, Bondi reported.
Participation rates presented in the packet showed breakfast participation at 23.2% for elementary schools, 9.4% for middle schools and 8.4% for high school. Lunch participation was shown at 49.1% elementary, 54.7% middle and 46.2% high school. Bondi said the improvement-opportunity log remains blank for this reporting period.
Board member Mr. Ross asked why the packet still included a complaints page given the lack of recent complaints; Bondi said he could remove that entry at the board’s request.
Next steps: staff will finalize the cafeteria documents for the record, consider removing the complaints report to reduce paperwork, and continue to report monthly financials for the food-service operation.
