Moran teachers tell board local author will work with eighth‑graders on memoirs and critique groups

At the March 24 meeting of the Wallingford Board of Education, Moran Middle School teachers Courtney Moran and Sarah Cellini described a recent author visit by Wallingford resident and former Moran student Emily Franke and outlined follow‑up writing activities for students.
The pair told the board the visit covered Franke’s planning and writing process and her experience as a published author; the visit was timed to support upcoming writing units. Moran teachers said eighth‑grade students will begin a memoir unit based on personal moments and a subset of students will be chosen for a focus writing (critique) group to prepare submissions for the Rotary Club essay contest. Selected students will work in writer’s circles with Franke and with creative writing students from Mark T. Sheehan High School.
Anne Veron Letterly, identified in public comment as a Moran teacher and WEA president, introduced the teachers to the board and said the visit builds on classroom work. Board members praised the collaboration and the chance for students to engage with a local, published author.
The program is described as a classroom enrichment activity; the teachers did not request board action during public comment but presented the classroom plan and invited continued support for author visits and writing partnerships.
