The Wallingford Board of Education on March 24 approved a series of routine and procedural items, including the consent agenda, two unpaid teacher leaves of absence, and the district’s annual healthy‑food certification and exemptions.
The board voted to accept the consent agenda items numbered 7.1 through 7.17 without discussion. Later in the meeting the board approved two unpaid leaves of absence for teachers: Monica Mathage (leave without pay from May 12, 2025, through the end of the school year) and Paige Carter (leave without pay from April 23, 2025, through May 30, 2025). Both leaves were approved by voice vote.
Under operations committee business, the board certified compliance with Connecticut nutrition rules for 2025–26 pursuant to CGS section 10‑215f (the district’s “healthy food” certification). The board also approved narrow exemptions allowing the sale of non‑conforming food or beverages when items are sold at events after the regular school day or on weekends, provided the products are sold outside the event location and not from vending machines or school stores. The motion lists conditions and examples (soccer games, school plays, interscholastic debates) and defines the regular school day as midnight before to 30 minutes after the official end of that day.
The board voted to enter executive session earlier in the meeting to discuss and approve leave requests; that motion carried and the board returned to open session to record the leave approvals.
Superintendent Belizzi also reminded the board the district expects the mayor’s budget recommendation by April 1 and that the board will present to the town council in April. The board also approved the community‑forum format (see separate story) and scheduled public sessions to review educational specifications.
