Board adopts meal-charging and wellness policy updates, certifies healthy-food participation and posts indoor air-quality reviews

The Norwalk Board of Education approved several nutrition and wellness-related policy items on March 18 and recorded that indoor air-quality reviews required by Connecticut statute have been completed and published.

The board voted unanimously to restore and adopt a meal-charging policy so the district has rules in place if application-based charging returns; school nutrition staff said the policy specifies how many meals can be charged and the communication process to families. The board also unanimously approved updates to the student nutrition and physical activity policy (wellness policy), which included minor verbiage changes, links to state resources and alignment with fundraising and concession-stand rules.

In a related set of approvals, the board certified the district’s healthy-food participation for the 2025–26 school year under Conn. Gen. Stat. 10-215f and approved limited food and beverage exceptions for specified after-school and event-based sales. The motions were approved by unanimous voice votes. Board members clarified that the district will continue to provide meals to students who cannot afford them and that any charging policy would be communicated clearly to families.

Finally, the board acknowledged an indoor air-quality update prepared in accordance with Conn. Gen. Stat. 10-220(d); staff said each school’s indoor-air-quality review has been posted to the district website and included in school FAQs as required by state law.

Why this matters: The decisions re-establish written procedures for meal charging if needed, update wellness-policy language and ensure statutory transparency on air quality; the healthy-food certification and exceptions set allowable food sales rules for the coming school year.
