The action followed public comments from alumni and community members who urged the board to honor longtime coaches. "Bob LaMelle created programs to help the athletes with their grades," said Stuart Katz, who identified himself as a New Haven Public Schools alumnus. "I hope that this action is a very fitting tribute to both of these gentlemen." Dr. Pamela Monk Kelly, who said she was coached and supervised by LaMelle, described him as a mentor who "transformed young boys into young men" and cited a record of high attendance for Coliseum games.
Board Member Dr. Joyner, who moved the naming, recounted both honorees' careers and the community impact of their programs, including international coaching and student-exchange efforts. The board voted in favor; during the roll call several members explicitly recorded "yes." Board Member Mr. Wilcox said after the vote that because he had missed some discussion he had not voted during the roll call but expressed personal support for both namings.
The board did not set a date for a dedication ceremony during the meeting. Staff said they will provide implementation details, including the formal plaque text and any ceremony plans.
