The New Haven Board of Education voted March 19 to name the district's adult education center the Reverend Dr. Edwin Edmonds Adult Education Center.
The vote came after board members described Edmonds' decades of local civic and educational work. "He stayed in this community, built his church in this community," said Dr. Joyner, a board member, who moved the naming and urged unanimous approval. "He was a giant." Dr. Benitez, a board member, said Edmonds encouraged people to "have my voice heard" and that naming the adult education facility would be fitting for someone who supported lifelong learning.
Superintendent Dr. Negron framed the naming within the district's stated priorities of operational efficiency and community partnership, saying the district seeks to honor leaders who contributed to education and civic life. Board members said the facility's mission ' serving adult learners and people needing alternative pathways ' made Edmonds an appropriate namesake.
During discussion, Board Member Mr. Juarez asked that staff double-check the spelling that would be engraved on the building; the board recorded a correction and proceeded with the motion. The motion carried with the board voting in favor.
The board did not set a public date for an unveiling or plaque installation during the meeting; staff said additional implementation details will be provided later.
