During the public-comment period, Colter Hendrix, identifying himself as a truck driver who regularly delivers in and through Madison, told the commission he and other drivers feel they have been followed and “harassed” by city police over the last eight months.
Hendrix said he had been followed through town in marked patrol vehicles on consecutive nights and that several colleagues had lost commercial driver’s licenses after receiving rolling-stop citations earlier in the year. He described an encounter in which he felt an officer did not properly identify himself and that the officer “demanded” an admission; Hendrix said he invoked his right to remain silent and was not ticketed in that incident. Hendrix said drivers have talked about boycotting Madison fuel purchases and urged the commission to seek clarity from the police department.
Mayor Lindsay thanked Hendrix for speaking, said the meeting is recorded and said the police chief would be asked to review the comments and respond as appropriate. No commission action related to the complaint was taken during the meeting.
