Morrow County undersheriff reports staffing progress, multiple search-and-rescue missions and asks for winter storage for marine vessels

Brian Snyder, Morrow County undersheriff, briefed the board on personnel, search-and-rescue activity and an equipment-maintenance request. Snyder said the sheriff’s office has been actively recruiting and making hires in dispatch and patrol and that multiple candidates are in final-background stages.
Snyder reported that in the last 30 days the sheriff’s office responded to four search-and-rescue missions — including one water rescue that was successful — and three mountain recovery missions in which crews rescued people who were stuck. “In the last 30 days... we’ve had 4 SAR missions. 1 on the water, water rescue, which was successful and went well,” he said.
Snyder raised a facilities issue: winter storage for marine vessels. He said winterizing and securing boats took extra staff time and that the county currently lacks heated, covered storage on the North End. Because vessels are expensive to maintain, he asked the board to consider capital improvements to provide heated/secure storage to reduce staff time and equipment wear; he said the office temporarily transported the vessel to Heppner for storage during winterization.
Commissioners and Snyder agreed to flag the request for further capital-planning discussion and to work with public-works staff on possible options.
