Deschutes County health staff asked the Board of Commissioners on April 4 for permission to provide verbal testimony in support of House Bill 2954, which would appropriate state general-fund dollars to the Oregon Health Authority for local health departments and federally recognized tribes to provide addiction-prevention services.
Staff said the county has already taken a support position and requested permission for a staff representative to testify at the Addiction and Community Safety Committee hearing on April 9. County staff also said a draft letter of support from the board had been routed to county leadership for signature.
Commissioners granted permission for staff to appear in Salem and sign the letter of support. Staff noted the bill would fund addiction-prevention services and that local public-health modernization and other priorities also appear on the county’s legislative one-pager.
Why it matters: HB 2954 would direct general-fund dollars to prevention services administered by the Oregon Health Authority; county leaders said state investment would support local public-health efforts.
