Deschutes County proclaims April Child Abuse Prevention Month and Fair Housing Month

Representatives of MountainStar Family Relief Nursery, Healthy Families of the High Desert and the Kids Center described joint prevention and support services during a brief presentation at the meeting. The groups outlined programs including home visiting, therapy and prevention education; county staff cited 532 confirmed cases of child abuse and neglect in Central Oregon in 2023 and urged community support for local services.
A separate presentation by Tyler Neeson, government affairs director for the Cascades East Association of Realtors, marked Fair Housing Month and reviewed Fair Housing Act principles and training opportunities for realtors.
Votes: The board adopted both proclamations by voice/roll-call vote. For each proclamation, Commissioner Chang and Commissioner Dyer voted yes; Chair DeBohm cast the deciding yes when votes were recorded.
Why this matters: The proclamations highlight county support for prevention and education programs for children and reinforce the county’s commitment to fair housing principles. The proclamations do not enact new policy or funding.
What’s next: County staff offered to provide a signed copy of the proclamations and follow-up information on community events including “Communities for Kids” open-house events that were scheduled across the county in April.
