Danville IT requests Microsoft licensing upgrades and email-security tools as cyber threats increase

IT staff said Windows 10 support ends in October and they are migrating city PCs to a supported OS; about 38 older machines need replacement and those capital costs were included in departmental operational budgets. Staff also proposed raising Microsoft licensing from the current standard tier to a premium tier to add services that include: Intune for centralized device provisioning and remote wipe; Purview for granular file access and data controls; increased mailbox and SharePoint storage; and identity protections such as geolocation-based sign-in restrictions and passwordless authentication.
IT requested about $22,000 per year for the licensing upgrade (about $100 per user annually for 220 users) and quoted an additional approximately $4,000 per year to deploy a specialized email-scanning and filtering service that pre-screens messages and attachments for malware and domain spoofing. IT representatives said recent increases in suspicious email activity have made the extra protections urgent.

The licensing costs are citywide and will affect departmental budgets because IT pays the license and expenses are distributed across departments.
