Volunteers report near-term steps for Winchester veterans memorial; plaques expected in March

Witt said the project has between $4,000 and $5,000 on hand and no outstanding bills, and listed remaining purchases: plain bricks for unfinished sidewalk sections (about $1,200), donor plaques (12-by-16 bronze plaques quoted at about $966 each; project may use two), and six bench plaques at roughly $200 each. He said granite memorial plaques have been purchased and should arrive in March and that remaining contractor work includes pouring a concrete wall base for memorial bricks and landscaping. Seven trees have been purchased and landscaping work will follow with planting and seeding.
Witt said the county veterans council will meet next Thursday to finalize finances and determine next construction steps; he suggested a Memorial Day dedication remains the target, depending on weather and contractor schedules.
