Two representatives of the Friends of the Library addressed the board during public comment to describe the organization’s relocation to space at the Center for Innovation (CFI).
Jan Martin and Susan Biel told the board the friends group moved into several rooms at CFI in June of the prior year after renovations left that space available. They said the group provides book sales and donation-sorting services, makes books available to students during open-house events and runs community book carts outside a CFI entrance.
"We loved being there. We loved those students. We loved those teachers. And we feel we're part of their family," Jan Martin said, describing how the group offers donated materials and occasional school supplies to students in need.
The friends group said they have worked with district curriculum staff to repurpose relatively new sets of World Book encyclopedias for elementary libraries, and they described plans for continuing student-focused distribution and community sales. The speakers asked for the board’s continued support and thanked district staff and custodians who have assisted them in setting up the space.
Ending: The board acknowledged the group’s work; no district action was requested during the meeting.
