Board approves construction change order and equipment purchases as bond projects advance

The Lapeer Community School Board voted March 25 to approve several procurement actions tied to ongoing bond construction and facilities work.
The board approved change order No. 23 to Absolute Fire Protection Inc. to add new fire-suppression risers needed for auditorium renovations and the Pac (performing-arts center) project. The motion specified an amount not to exceed $126,437.13; the board approved the motion by voice roll call.
Board members also approved the purchase of two used buses through Hoagstra Transportation. The transportation director recommended two 53-passenger special-needs buses with under 45,000 miles at $89,895 each. The committee recommended awarding the contract with a total cost not to exceed $179,790; the board approved the purchase during the meeting.
The board additionally approved an asbestos-abatement contract for Turl (Trail) Elementary to Nova Environmental Inc. for $41,680 to remove ceiling panels, associated grid components and lighting fixtures as part of planned renovations.
Those votes follow a facilities presentation from district staff outlining progress on bond-funded work at Lapeer High School and other campuses. Bart Mallows, the district’s construction/project contact, said the high school classroom and multipurpose additions are ahead of schedule: a recently completed multipurpose space and expanded weight room are already in use by students. Staff said the 10,500-square-foot science-classroom addition — two labs plus two general science classrooms — is nearly finished; final mechanical, plumbing and electrical work remains before furniture installation and classroom configuration in August.
The board also saw visuals and timelines for the larger "Big Pack 6" package, which includes the auditorium (a 3,700-square-foot lobby addition), auditorium interior renovations (target capacity about 509 seats), North parking-lot replacement and bus-loop improvements. Civil-site work for a new bus loop and detention system was reported roughly 50 percent complete; staff said the North parking-lot tear-out and replacement will be finished for the next school year.
Other facility items under way include bathroom renovations with new ceramic tile and fixtures, corridor ceiling and lighting replacements, an upgraded fire-alarm system (468 devices across the high school) and a full replacement of more than 1,400 fire-suppression heads that staff said had reached end of life.
Ending: District staff said the projects are being phased to keep classrooms and services available; ribbon-cutting dates will be scheduled as spaces are completed.
