District to conduct active-shooter and reunification drills near Bowie and Academy; community notice planned

Superintendent Dr. Ware said the trainings are part of ongoing safety work overseen by the district’s student-supports office and coordinated with police and fire departments. Carol Cruz, of student supports, told the committee the exercise will take place on Friday in the Bowie/Academy area and that residents should expect to see “a lot of police cars” during the drill. The district said communications staff will post notice to alert neighbors and that the training is voluntary for staff participants.
Officials described the training as continuing exercises this year that include updating evacuation sites, forming a district reunification team, and strengthening existing school-level plans. The district said it will schedule further planning for August and additional trainings are planned throughout the year.
No formal policy change or vote was recorded; the committee received the briefing and members thanked staff for the work.
