District staff said planned active-shooter and reunification training near Bowie School and the Academy will involve visible police vehicles; the district will notify the public in advance to avoid alarm.
School district staff told the Chicopee School Committee on March 19 that an active-shooter and reunification training exercise is scheduled for Friday near Bowie School and the Academy and that the police presence may be notable.
Carol Cruz, who the superintendent identified as overseeing emergency-management and student-support training, told the committee the district will coordinate with the Chicopee Police Department and the fire department and that the communications office will post notices to the public. “So on Friday, if you see a lot of police cars around that area, don't be concerned,” Cruz said.
Cruz said the district conducts ongoing training throughout the year, updates evacuation sites and is building a district reunification team, with additional planning scheduled for August.
Committee members credited the district for expanded safety and reunification work and noted that the training reflects continuing preparation for multiple emergency scenarios.
