Tunica County supervisors approve grant applications, personnel actions and multiple road and equipment orders

The Tunica County Board of Supervisors on Thursday approved multiple routine items, including grant applications, personnel appointments and pay adjustments, road-project authorizations and equipment-financing documents.
Among approvals, the board authorized county staff to apply for a federal Homeland Security Grant Program grant for fiscal year 2025, approved personnel changes in the sheriff’s office and administrative fund, accepted a change order and formal board order for road-and-bridge projects, and authorized lease-purchase financing for four new John Deere tractors for the road department.
Specific personnel actions approved by the board included assigning additional receiving-clerk duties to Carolyn Gordon (property and evidence clerk) effective March 2025; a pay increase for Laverne Shannon from $15 to $16.45 per hour effective March 21, 2025, funded from the administration fund; appointment of Frankie Harris to assistant tech and records clerk at $20.75 per hour effective March 24; and appointment of Jovan Horton as deputy jailer at $18 per hour effective March 19. The board also approved replacing seasonal laborer George Wilson with Sam Cox at $15 per hour.
On infrastructure, the county engineer requested and the board issued an order to allow the Tunica County Utility District to place a water line within the right-of-way of the Walnut Lake project and to permit valves to be installed at each end to allow isolation if the line is disturbed during construction. The board also approved a change order for the ERBR bridge project on Old Highway 61 submitted by Tabith Brothers Contracting Company; county staff said the project is underrunning by roughly $170,000–$180,000 due to use of shorter piles, and the change order adds measures such as flowable fill in approach shoulders, geotextile fabric understone, and additional riprap at ditch outlets to reduce future settlement and erosion.
Road and Bridge staff also received approval to assist the town of Tunica with clearing a ditch near East Irwin and within city limits. The board authorized a lease-purchase financing agreement for four John Deere tractors under state contract; county staff said the additional annual finance fees associated with the tractors would be about $431,039 in the county’s finance schedule.
The board approved a 2025 Solid Waste Assistance Grant submission (competitive and noncompetitive) that county staff said would cover about 85% of the solid waste officer’s salary, and authorized the grants department to prepare a Firehouse Subs Public Safety Foundation application to purchase turnout gear for the North Tunica Fire District. The board also approved routine items including the credit card report, payroll, and the claims docket.
Finally, the board adopted a resolution of appreciation for Nettie Mae Robinson Reed and adjourned to its next meeting on Monday, April (time announced as 4 p.m.).
