Dr. Jones said similar language exists in policies used by other districts in the region and that the policy would preserve staff opportunities for consulting while providing appropriate oversight.
Board members expressed general support but asked for a narrower definition of who would be captured by the policy and asked Dr. Jones to consult with administrative staff before the second reading. Trustees asked staff to clarify whether the policy applies only to education-related consulting (for example, workshops, presentations and coaching) and not to unrelated part-time work (for example, a retail position). Dr. Jones confirmed the intent is to capture education-related professional services and to avoid discouraging legitimate outside employment unrelated to district duties.
Trustees also asked whether the district’s legal team had reviewed the draft language; Dr. Jones said legal review has occurred. The draft will return for a second and final reading at a future meeting after administration consults with affected administrators and finalizes wording.
