The City Council unanimously adopted Resolution 2025-09 to rename the portion of Jackrabbit Lane north of Main Street to North Jackrabbit Lane.
Planning and addressing staff told the council the change responds to repeated delivery and emergency-dispatch errors caused by duplicate addressing on the north and south segments of Jackrabbit Lane, which sit in different ZIP-code areas. "We've had situations where we have duplicate numbers on the south end of Jackrabbit Lane, which is a Bozeman ZIP code, and the North end, which is the Belgrade ZIP code," the staff presentation said. That duplication has led to package misdelivery and at least some emergency calls being routed to the wrong end of the street.
Under state law the city must publish a resolution and allow 30 days for written protests; if more than 50% of affected addresses object, the change cannot proceed. Staff said the city had received no written protests as of the meeting.
Council adopted the resolution and directed the city clerk to file the name change with the Gallatin County Clerk and Recorder as required by MCA 7-14-411(2). Staff recommended affected residents submit postal-change requests to the U.S. Postal Service to avoid mail interruption; staff said the city GIS team will notify address authorities of the change.
The resolution affects addresses from Main Street to Rizzo Lane and, according to staff, minimizes the number of address reassignments compared with an alternate plan that would rename the south segment instead.
