Council discusses Lakeview golf course phases, donations and next steps for short course

Council members and staff reviewed progress and remaining work on the Lakeview golf course master plan and discussed whether to advance a small executive short course and additional beautification projects. Dan, who serves on the golf board, walked council through phases and trade-offs made during earlier construction, noting that phase 1 and much of phase 2 are complete though holes 11 and 12 had alternate work performed. "In phase 2, holes 11 and 12 were not able to be completed," Dan said, describing how mounding and bunker work led to compromises with the construction company.
Kevin (parks/rec staff) and Dan discussed priorities for the next phase, including drainage, new greens and a three-hole short course intended to boost junior golf participation. Council members asked for cost estimates and recommended the golf board provide a revised phase list showing completed items and estimated costs for remaining work. Kevin said park and recreation requested $250,000 toward future golf projects earlier in the year. "Earlier this year, the park and rec department did request to designate $250,000 towards those future projects as well," Kevin told the council.
Council members reviewed prior fundraising and budget figures discussed at a November meeting: the project had been referenced as a $1,600,000 project with $500,000 in private donations; at the work session staff clarified the $500,000 figure comprises both private donations and golf-fund contributions. Dan said the golf board expects to raise donations toward a $500,000 commitment and that the course will cover remaining needs if shortfalls occur; he also said the board has already tapped approximately $75,000 of committed funds.
Council asked staff to provide an updated, cross-checked list of completed phases and a rough cost estimate for moving the short course or other beautification items earlier in the schedule so the golf board and council can set priorities during budget discussions.
