Mitchell Sports and Events Authority approves routine financials, reviews event evaluations and funds Knights of Columbus request

The Mitchell Sports and Events Authority on March 5 approved its meeting minutes and a financial report, reviewed evaluation forms for several recent events, and voted to fund a Knights of Columbus request for Special Olympics basketball.
Treasurer-level reporting showed year-to-date collections and the authority’s fund balance. The report: award checks totaling $55,500 have been approved and paid; the current available fund balance was reported at $94,500. Year-to-date collections reported were $35,459.50, which the staff said equates to 17,745 room nights. The staff gave a six-year comparison of room-night performance and percent changes versus prior years.
The authority reviewed three event evaluation reports from events already held this year:
- The first annual indoor pickleball tournament (January) drew 80 players across eight divisions; staff estimated about 30 room nights. The authority awarded $2,500 to the event for prizes, medals and equipment; the evaluation showed a net income of $3,088.85 that would be retained for future event or facility needs.
- The DWU All-State Jazz Band event (Jan. 31–Feb. 1) reported total spectator attendance of 204 and 38 participants; staff estimated about 45 room nights. The authority awarded $1,000 that helped pay guest directors; the event reported a $667.67 profit toward future educator conference travel.
- The DW Culver's Girls and Boys High School Basketball Classic (February) featured 36 teams (18 girls, 18 boys). The authority awarded $3,000 for facility rental and referees; the event reported a total profit of $7,265.97 to fund team-maker scholarships.
During the meeting, a Knights of Columbus funding request for Special Olympics basketball was presented as a funding application requesting $1,500. A motion to “fund the full” request was moved and later seconded; the motion passed. The transcript contains one inconsistent numeric rendering of the motion’s result (it records “Motion passes for $7.50”), but staff and the application materials indicated the request was for $1,500; the authority’s motion approved funding for the Knights of Columbus as presented in the application.
