The Yankton City Commission voted unanimously to approve memorandum 20523, authorizing the city to join a regional water membership.
Commissioners approved the measure following brief staff remarks about membership timing and fees. A staff member said membership windows likely will close in the next few years and that early membership increases the city’s chance of receiving funding. The staff member said membership fees are set based on population and, at certain points, may be adjusted based on the amount of water taken.
Commissioners cast a roll-call vote: Mosher — aye; Villanueva — aye; Weber — aye; Benson — aye; Brunick — aye; Sarta — aye; Hanoff — aye; Minor — aye; Mayor Schromm — aye. The mayor announced the motion carried.
City staff did not specify which regional entity the membership was joining beyond discussion referencing a regional water entity and made no additional funding or schedule commitments during the meeting. Commissioners asked no follow-up questions on fee calculations or the membership deadline during the public portion of the discussion.
The commission moved on to other agenda items after the vote.
