Commission awards facade grants to two downtown projects including Dakota Theatre panels

The Yankton City Commission voted March 24 to award two downtown facade grants recommended by the facade grant committee.
City staff described a competitive field of eight applications and recommended funding two projects that leverage private investment. The first is a renovation at 312 West Third Street (the former Boston Shoes/Boots property owned by Ewald) with a total project cost of $64,780; the committee recommended a $15,000 grant toward that project. The second is repair and replacement of enamel panels and substructure work on the Dakota Theatre at 328 Walnut Street, a project estimated at $133,000; the theater already received a $22,000 Deadwood grant and the committee recommended the remaining $15,000 available in the facade grant fund.
Commissioner Mosher announced an abstention from the vote, citing a recent affiliation; the abstention was recorded before the roll call. The remaining commissioners approved the grants by roll call vote.
Staff said the Dakota Theatre’s substructure requires removal and rebuild before panels can be reinstalled; the facade grant would help address that substructure and panel replacement. The city’s facade committee evaluated applications on ability to leverage private funds and project readiness. The approved grants are intended to preserve historic downtown character and to motivate further private investment in building façades.
