Council approves $1.20 million slurry-seal contract; city to contract directly with Aztec

The City of Brookings awarded a $1,203,814.04 contract for a citywide slurry-seal pavement preservation program to Asphalt Surfacing Technologies (Aztec), the low bidder on a procurement administered by the City of Sioux Falls.

A staff presenter described slurry seal as a one-step pavement preservation method that lays a thin, cured surface rather than a chip-and-sweep process. “Basically, it’s just a one-step process … it’s like a thin layer of pavement. And this stuff cures and it hardens in about less than two hours,” the presenter said.

Why it matters: the city budgeted $1.3 million for pavement preservation this year; the low bid of $1,203,814.04 fits within that allocation and will roughly double the area treated compared with last year.
