BMU board approves landfill leachate sewer connection; Sixth Street water tower removal targeted for summer 2026

The Brookings Municipal Utilities (BMU) board reported several operational updates to the City Council, including approval to construct a leachate line to connect the city landfill to the sewer system, which will replace current truck-haul operations to the wastewater plant.
At the council meeting, BMU-related remarks (presented by a BMU representative in council remarks) said construction of the leachate line will begin following the BMU board’s approval. The board also approved water and sewer connections for the Marketplace development.
BMU staff reported that automated metering for electric and water usage is largely functioning with a few outstanding items to resolve. The board also discussed financial indicators and reported that BMU revenues appear sufficient to meet debt-service requirements.
Separately, BMU staff said the tentative date for removing the Sixth Street water tower is sometime during the summer of 2026; that timeline is subject to operational planning and coordination.
