Council hears first reading for conditional-use permit to allow gunsmithing home occupation in R-1C district

Struck described the proposal: a gunsmith would repair firearms in a two-car detached garage with a workbench and tool storage. Firearms would be stored in a safe inside the house when not being worked on, and the applicant must obtain all required state and federal permits for the activity. The Planning Commission recommended approval 8–0 and the development-review team supports the request; the police department reported no issues with the proposal, Struck said.
The ordinance as presented limits the conditional-use permit to the applicant (it is non‑transferable) and requires proof of appropriate state and federal permits every three years to the city. The item will return for second reading on March 11 for formal action.
