Ordinance committee forwards Section 9-32 redistricting map to Common Council

The Norwalk City Ordinance Committee voted Jan. 21 to forward Section 9-32 — “Districts Established,” which sets the common council voting districts — to the full Common Council for a vote next week.

The measure, discussed during the committee’s regular meeting, updates the metes-and-bounds descriptions of specific voting districts following comments made on earlier drafts. Committee member Josh Goldstein made the motion to send the item to the Common Council; the committee chair said the motion had enough votes to pass and “it passes on to go to common council next week.”

Committee staff noted the draft was revised to reflect comments from Diane Paladino and Stuart Wells and that Matthew Lane, now working under Registrar Stuart Wells, was available to answer technical questions about the mapped boundaries. No members of the public spoke at the hearing on the redistricting ordinance.

The item will next appear on the Common Council agenda for final consideration. The ordinance committee did not adopt the map tonight; it transmitted the updated draft for the council’s vote.

The committee’s action preserves the current timeline for Norwalk’s reapportionment process and hands final decision-making to the full council at its next meeting.
