Assistant Chief Conti told commissioners the department’s upgraded records-management software went live in January and has received positive feedback from the marshal division and company officers.
Conti said the system integrates records, apparatus mobile data terminals and a new app on iPads for crews, putting preplanning, hydrant locations and apparatus checks into a single platform. The department worked with GIS staff to map all hydrants and label them with flow information so firefighters can choose hydrants by gallons-per-minute (GPM) when responding.
Conti emphasized a new capability to mark hydrants out of service in real time so crews en route can see an unavailable hydrant on the map. He said the initial rollout has been successful and that inspectors and the mechanics division will begin using the system as the rollout continues.
Why it matters: integrated preplanning and live hydrant status can speed water-source decisions at incidents and improve operational safety.
Speakers: Assistant Chief Conti; Lindsay King from GIS (referenced).
