Brookings rolls out interactive online dashboard to track 2021–2026 strategic plan

Deputy City Manager Jake Meschke presented a new interactive online dashboard on Jan. 27 that will allow the public and council to track the City of Brookings’ 2021–2026 strategic plan.
Meschke said the plan, last updated in April 2024, has until now been maintained as a static PDF. The new dashboard will show the council’s strategic pillars across the top, allow users to drill down to goals and objectives and display progress with a color-coordinated system: green for on track, yellow for disruptions, gray for pending and black for discontinued items. “You can look at it at a 30,000-foot level ... but the beauty is it also allows council members or the public to drill down and really get as much information as they'd like,” Meschke said.
Department heads will populate the progress tracker, Meschke said, using a slider that estimates percent-complete; city staff will perform quality control checks on those updates. The dashboard will include narrative updates describing accomplishments, challenges and next steps for each objective. Meschke told council the dashboard is not yet public; staff will post it to the city website in the coming days and follow with social media outreach.
Council members asked about where the link will appear on the website and how departments will provide and verify updates. Meschke said the dashboard is a new process and will improve with each round of annual updates.
