The Brookings City Council approved a five-year lease of terminal space at the Brookings Regional Airport to Civil Air Patrol, Airport Manager Lucas Dodd Perkins told the council.
Staff recommended authorizing a lease for approximately “10 20 square feet” of terminal space to Civil Air Patrol beginning Feb. 1, 2025, at $97.85 per month with a 3% annual increase. The airport board unanimously recommended renewal, noting Civil Air Patrol’s emergency services, aviation mentoring and cadet leadership programs. The local Civil Air Patrol unit operates a Cessna 172 (Air Force-owned), has 18 members (four senior members age 21+ and 14 cadets age 12–18) and supports search-and-rescue training and regional conferences.
Dodd Perkins told the council the local unit has leased terminal space since February 2012; in 2016 the council approved a reduced lease rate in recognition of the unit’s community service and limited funds. The Civil Air Patrol pays its share of utilities and raises roughly $3,000 annually through fundraising to support operations, the airport manager said.
The council voted to approve the resolution authorizing the lease.
