MSU student urges Bozeman to create student advisory board to boost engagement

Gracie Caudle, an environmental science sophomore at Montana State University, told the Bozeman City Commission that students are underrepresented in city boards and meetings and urged the creation of a student advisory board.
"I think it is time that we create a student advisory board for the city governments," Caudle said during public comment. She described prior proposals—internships, direct public transit to city meetings and other outreach—that she said have not sufficiently increased student participation.
Caudle said a student board could include students from multiple disciplines, help integrate campus- and city-level planning and give students a formal channel to advise on issues tied to housing, transportation and sustainability. She suggested the board could reduce alienation among students and increase civic participation as Bozeman continues to grow.
Commissioners did not take action on the suggestion at Tuesday’s meeting; the commission noted public-comment items cannot be acted on without prior notice, but the idea could be placed on a future agenda for formal discussion.
