Residents propose student volunteer yard help and veterans/first-responder banners; council hears offers of support

During the public-comment period at the LaSalle City Council meeting, residents suggested community initiatives and offered local contacts to help implement them.

Dawn Hicks told the council she had spoken with LaSalle-Peru High School Superintendent Steven Robleski and Jay McCracken of the IVCC board about recruiting high‑school and college student volunteers to help disabled or elderly residents with yard work such as grass cutting. Hicks said she would like to work with Police Chief Mike and city staff to identify residents most in need and to coordinate volunteers. "They are both very interested in helping the City Of LaSalle out with, maybe getting some student volunteers to help some of, the people in our town that are disabled and or, elderly that are on fixed incomes," she said.

Hicks also raised the subject of banners to honor veterans and first responders. She said she spoke to a representative of Ameren who indicated the company would permit banners on its poles and asked Mayor Grove and staff to explore installing banners to honor veterans and first responders in LaSalle.

Another resident, Dana Hicks, asked how to apply for city committees and suggested that future meetings highlight and explain one ordinance for public clarity; she cited alley parking rules as a possible topic. Council members responded with instructions on how appointments are made and said they would look into public outreach on ordinances.

Council members acknowledged the offers to help and said staff would follow up with the police chief and administration to coordinate volunteer lists and to explore banner placement rules with Ameren and city policies. No formal council action was taken during the public-comment period.
