Guymon council administers oath to new ward members, elects Kim Peterson mayor and Gerald Dean Sanchez vice mayor

GUYMON, Okla. — At a special meeting Monday evening, the Guymon City Council administered the oath of office to the new council members from Ward 1 and Ward 2 and held internal elections for mayor and vice mayor.
Council members were sworn in after a staff member led them through the oath, which asks officeholders to pledge to “support, obey, and defend the Constitution of the United States and the Constitution of the State of Oklahoma” and not to accept monetary or other valuable considerations for performing duties, other than compensation allowed by law. The oath covered the councilmember roles and the city’s related authorities.
The council then appointed Mike Shannon to serve as presiding officer for the election. A motion to make Shannon the officer in charge of the election was moved and seconded and carried with five ayes.
A councilmember moved to elect Kim Peterson as mayor of the City of Guymon; the motion was seconded and carried with five ayes. After the vote, Peterson assumed the role of mayor.
The council next nominated Gerald Dean Sanchez for vice mayor. The nomination was moved and seconded and carried with five ayes, and Sanchez was elected vice mayor.
Roll call at the start of the meeting showed a quorum present. The meeting was brief and concluded immediately after the leadership votes.
