Resident seeks yellow curb painting at North Second and Mary; council asks engineering to inspect

Kay Cortez presented photographs to the council and asked that the city paint curbs yellow at the North Second and Mary intersection to improve sight distance and reduce blocked intersections caused by parked vehicles.
Cortez said parked cars near the stop sign reduce visibility for drivers turning right and that the east side of the intersection already has yellow curb paint while the opposite side does not. She said the close proximity of parked vehicles sometimes prevents two vehicles from passing through the intersection and requested staff paint curbs within the standard distance of an approach stop.
Council and staff agreed to send engineering to inspect the location and bring back a report. Council members referenced commonly applied paint distances (Cortez and others cited 30 feet from the stop approach and 15 feet from a curb) but asked engineering to confirm the applicable ordinance and any pending construction plans that may affect the immediate need for paint. Staff noted that sidewalk and ramp reconstruction was planned for portions of the corridor and that painting may be a temporary fix until larger improvements occur.
Council asked staff to return with concrete information, including the applicable ordinance distance and whether pending projects would make paint unnecessary. No immediate enforcement action was taken; engineering will assess and report to council.
