The Municipal Service and Properties Committee approved Ordinance 3 78 20 25 on April 14, 2025, authorizing the director of parks and recreation to enter into a contract with the Cleveland Municipal Football League (doing business as Cleveland Muni Football League) to run a citywide youth program serving children and cheerleaders.
Councilman Starr described the ordinance as continuing city support previously set at $160,000 annually for the muni football league, which serves youth from approximately ages 5 to 14 and has operated in the city for more than a century. “This is opportunity to have some support from the city in which we can be able to provide services to hundreds of teams,” Councilman Starr said.
Several council members praised the league and the council’s prior decision to increase municipal support; Councilman Brian Casey said he supported the measure but warned it should not set a precedent for administration not to appear at committee hearings. The ordinance was approved by the committee and the clerk was directed to sign.
