The McComb School District Board approved a request for proposals (RFP) for Summit Elementary on March 27 and spent substantial time discussing network wiring, vendor qualifications and federal E‑Rate timing.
At the item’s presentation, the board was told staff is compiling detailed specifications and materials lists. Presenter Mister Brown said the district will require a mandatory walk‑through for prospective contractors so vendors can inspect site conditions and provide accurate estimates for the network cabling work. “We're going to have to do a mandatory walk through for anybody who wants to… and then, give us an estimation on the network part of it,” the transcript records.
Board members and staff discussed whether one vendor could provide all necessary services to simplify contract management. Staff noted that cabling work is comparatively easier before ceilings are installed; staff advised that after ceiling installation, cabling will require more invasive work such as installing wall penetrations.
The board discussed using the federal E‑Rate program (the Schools and Libraries Program of the Universal Service Fund) to help fund network work. Staff said the current filing window had closed; if the district files next year, funding and installation would not be available until the 2026–27 funding year, with installations earliest in July 2027. That timeline means the district may need short‑term funding options if it intends to complete work before the E‑Rate‑funded window begins.
A board member moved to approve the Summit Elementary RFP process; the motion was seconded and the board approved it by voice vote. Members asked staff to include detailed wiring specifications in the RFP and to confirm which parts of the project would be eligible for E‑Rate funding.
The board also discussed vendor qualifications and whether district vendors who have performed similar cabling work could meet the full scope; staff said at least one local vendor had done cabling at the high school and other district facilities and could be considered.
