Council authorizes $13,605 commission for historic Willamette Main Street bicycle kiosk art

West Linn City Council on March 17 authorized a contract with artist Travis Pond for a historic Willamette Main Street bicycle kiosk after the Arts & Culture Commission presented updated cost estimates.
Charity (Arts & Culture Commission) and Doug Erickson, library and community services director, explained cost increases driven mainly by higher materials and fabrication costs, insurance requirements and delivery/installation expenses. The updated total cited by staff was $13,605.47, which includes a contingency. "The materials is almost twice as much as he's taking for himself," a commission member said, noting the artist’s modest labor fee and eagerness to complete the project.
Staff said the city’s percent-for-art fund holds approximately $130,000 and the commission recommended moving forward. Council voted to authorize the contract and recognized that material costs could change but that a contingency was included in the updated quote. Staff expects fabrication and installation to take roughly three months once the contract is finalized.
