Grundy County staff readies internal task force to allocate opioid settlement funds

Grundy County finance staff told the board that the county has received just over $360,000 in opioid settlement payments to date and that statewide projections put the county's eventual total at roughly a little over $1 million.
The county's finance director, Matt (Finance Director), said staff have formed an internal working group to plan use of the funds for prevention, treatment and related activities. The group will include county attorneys, public safety and health representatives and several county board members. Matt said the county is required to submit quarterly reports for the funds and that projected payments to Grundy County are scheduled through 2037.
The internal group described by Matt will identify potential programs and return recommendations to the board via the finance committee or the Law and Justice committee for further review, he said.
Matt said the county has a preliminary list of possible uses and will meet to prioritize options; no formal allocations or policy decisions were made during the meeting. He also cautioned that the projected total will arrive in multiple payments over years and that the county should not assume a steady annual amount.
Board members who spoke during the discussion asked for the dollar figures and for confirmation that public-safety and health partners would be part of the planning group. Matt confirmed participation by the state's attorney's office, public defender, coroner, sheriff and health department staff, along with county board and administrative staff. He said the county will route formal recommendations through the appropriate committees when the group completes its work.
The finance director said required quarterly reporting on the settlements is current; board members did not take formal action on allocations at the meeting.
