Commissioner Merida introduced the resolution and said Stewart’s leadership helped produce “two years of no murders in the city of Evanston” and noted that Stewart was named Illinois Police Chief of the Year, describing her as “the first woman ever in Illinois to get that honor” during the remarks. Chief Shanita Stewart accepted the recognition and thanked county and municipal partners and staff. “Thank you for the recognition,” she said, and later acknowledged colleagues and the memory of a fallen colleague when receiving the honor.
The resolution and public commendation were placed on the meeting’s consent calendar and approved as part of that package. Commissioners and the chief posed for photos after the presentation.
The board’s recognition highlighted local law-enforcement-community partnerships and the chief’s awards; no policy or budget action accompanied the resolution.
