Thompson School District meeting turns into hours-long debate over transgender students; board adopts resolution supporting all students

More than 70 residents filled the board room and overflow rooms at the Thompson School District R‑2J board meeting March 26, as hours of public comment focused on transgender students’ participation in athletics and on a board member’s public display of a shirt bearing the phrase “Real Women Rock.”

Students, parents, staff and mental‑health professionals urged opposite outcomes. Several female athletes and parents said allowing biological males to compete in girls’ sports is unsafe and unfair; other speakers, including district employees and transgender students, said rhetoric singling out transgender youth increases harm and suicide risk and urged the board to protect and affirm vulnerable students.

Why it matters: Speakers made conflicting claims about fairness, safety and legal duties. Multiple callers and presenters cited Title IX, the Colorado High School Activities Association (CHSAA) and national athletics bodies while urging the board either to protect single‑sex competition or to uphold non‑discrimination policies and student privacy.
