Brent Ackerson elected Metro Council president after multiple ballots

After an extended series of nominations and roll-call votes, the Louisville Metro Council elected Councilmember Brent Ackerson as Metro Council president on Jan. 9, 2025.
Nominations opened following organization procedures. Multiple council members were nominated over several rounds, including Councilmembers Kevin Kramer and Marcus Winkler. The council repeatedly conducted roll-call votes but no candidate reached the required simple majority of 14 in early rounds.
In the final roll call announced by the clerk, Councilmember Brent Ackerson received 15 votes and Councilmember Marcus Winkler received 11 votes. The presiding officer announced, “Congratulations. Our new president for 02/2025 is Brent Ackerson.”
Council rules required a simple majority (14 votes) for election; votes were cast by oral roll call as the clerk called members’ names. Several rounds featured changing tallies and occasional “present” votes; a motion to recess was taken at one point and failed to carry when the vote was 13–13, which extended the balloting sequence. The council then resumed balloting until a candidate received a majority.
The new council president will preside over subsequent council business; the council directed the president Pro Tem to notify the mayor’s office that the council had been organized for February 2025.
