Students recognized for parish litter-prevention program; Tangipahoa cattlemen honored as Louisiana’s 'Prime Parish'

The Tangipahoa Parish Council recognized students and volunteers involved in a school-based litter-prevention program and accepted a presentation from the parish cattlemen’s association on March 24.
Parish staff and volunteers displayed poster winners from five schools participating in the litter program; Ginger, who led the program in local schools, told the council she taught 14 classes across five schools this semester and worked with about 250 children each week. "This semester I had 5 schools with 14 classes around 250 kids," Ginger said. She described classroom lessons on the three R's and recycling, and noted efforts at festivals and community events to recycle materials — including collecting about 2,000 pounds of oyster shells for recycling at a recent event.
Council members praised the students and volunteers and applauded the Parish Council’s litter committee for its role in outreach and festivals. The council noted the program’s goal is to teach children about litter so they influence adults, and one council member cited an anecdote of a parent who learned about the environmental impact of cigarette filters through a child’s lesson.
Separately, Logan Hosser, identified as president of the Tangipahoa Parish Cattlemen's Association, presented a plaque recognizing the parish as the Louisiana Cattlemen’s Association 2024 'Prime Parish of the Year.' Hosser said the award reflected membership growth, sponsorship of junior livestock shows and scholarships for up-and-coming cattle producers. "This year for 2024, we ... were awarded with this plaque saying that we're 2024 Louisiana Cattlemen's Association Prime Parish of the Year," Hosser said. He described the parish’s scholarship program and fundraising through rodeo VIP-room sponsorships.
Ending: Council members applauded students, volunteers and the cattlemen’s association. Staff and officials said they will continue education, recycling and outreach efforts across parish festivals and school programs.
