County will remove responders from active roles July 1 if physicals are not current, chief warns

Chief Carroll told the Oconee County Rescue Squad Advisory Commission on March 27 that responders who do not have a valid physical on file will be removed from county operations beginning July 1.
"As of July 1, if one of your responders does not have a valid physical, they will be removed from our workman's competent," Chief Carroll said, noting that those individuals will be pulled from active 911 rosters and be ineligible to operate apparatus tied to county coverage. He said a formal letter from the county administrator will be sent to chiefs to outline the policy and enforcement timeline.
Carroll said the responsibility for ensuring responders obtain and report valid physicals rests with station chiefs. "It is the chief's responsibility, and you were taking responsible for them, as a chief, making sure that they're not coming to calls," he said. The commission noted the county currently reports about 470 active members and urged chiefs to update contact information so notification systems will reach members.
Staff described available clinics and the current bid cycle for county-provided physicals; chiefs were told to encourage members to schedule appointments and to submit documentation. Carroll said the new reporting system will include bulletin‑board functionality and automated expiration alerts once rosters are current, but emphasized that accurate roster data is required for those features to function.
