Commission adopts temporary regulation defining school psychologist assistant license

The Commission on Professional Standards in Education on Tuesday adopted a temporary regulation that defines the length and conversion requirements for a school psychologist assistant license.

At a public hearing on the proposed temporary regulation T00-24, Jeff Briski, director of educator development, licensure and family engagement and secretary to the commission, told commissioners that the regulation establishes a five-year, renewable term for the school psychologist assistant license. "This license will be valid for five years, and it is renewable," Briski said. He also explained that applicants may obtain a provisional school psychologist license without an advanced degree if they meet the coursework requirements, are enrolled in a preparation program and are completing required internship hours. "Candidates will need to have earned the advanced degree in order to convert their provisional license to a standard license," Briski said.

President Rosar opened the hearing and called for public comment; no public comments were received in Carson City or Las Vegas. Commissioner Belknap moved to adopt the regulation; Commissioner Freeman seconded. The commission called for the question and recorded unanimous assent on the record with members saying "Aye." No opposition was recorded.

The regulation clarifies the license term and creates a provisional pathway tied to active enrollment and internship completion; it does not remove the final advanced-degree requirement for conversion to a standard license. The commission noted the change will appear in the temporary regulation text as proposed and will be renewable in accordance with the regulation language.

The commission moved to other agenda items after the adoption. No additional implementation details (such as effective dates or administrative deadlines) were specified during the hearing.
