Lydia Young, chair of the Human Relations Commission (HRC), briefed council on HRC activities and plans for 2025. Young said the HRC plans a fair‑housing event in April described as a “housing night” that would bring together legal aid, the community land trust, financial‑literacy providers (including Breaking Chains) and local housing agencies to offer a one‑stop, open‑house format for residents seeking housing information.
Young said the commission also voted to start a subcommittee focused on “sanctuary status and human dignity.” The subcommittee will work collaboratively with community partners, including OCSI, on a “need‑to‑know basis” to identify ways to protect vulnerable residents and return recommendations to the commission for public education and outreach. Young framed the subcommittee as an ongoing effort to protect groups facing threats to their dignity and safety and said members are “energized” to begin outreach and education work.
The HRC plans to align its activities with other community events and Diversity, Equity and Inclusion months to amplify outreach and ensure resources reach residents. Young asked council for support and said the commission will follow up with dates and additional details.
