Ryan, president and CEO of the Jackson County Chamber, outlined the 20-year vision effort and said the vendor selected, Planning NEXT of Columbus, Ohio, had recently completed similar regional work and offered a lower proposal than other firms. County staff said participating with the chamber could reduce the county’s standalone cost, which in past years ran in the tens of thousands of dollars.
During debate, one commissioner urged caution about outside influence and profit motives in recommendations from nongovernmental partners. Commissioner Ploske said he planned to support the county’s participation: "I think it's a good idea for the county to be a part of this process," he said, adding that partnership could align county priorities with residents and local businesses.
Outcome: the committee voted to send the proposal to the full board for a final vote; staff noted the item is under $75,000 but recommended a full-board decision because of the plan’s scope.
Ending: the referral means the county’s participation and budget commitment will be decided in a future full-board meeting; staff will return with cost details and a recommended scope for the county component.
